Alexandre Kateb is an economist, essayist and international consultant. He specializes in banking and financial economics, macroeconomic analysis and investment strategy. In this capacity, through the consulting company he founded ten years ago, COMPETENCE FINANCE, he advises a selected range of financial institutions (central and commercial banks, investment funds, stock exchanges and clearing houses) on topics ranging from strategic foresight to risk analysis and regulatory compliance. His clients include a number of family offices, global macro hedge funds and high profile financial organisations such as the BNP Paribas Group and the leading European clearing house, LCH Clearnet.

Alexandre Kateb also advises governments on issues ranging from general economic policy, sectoral reform – with a focus on financial sector reform, and attraction of foreign investors. He has been mandated by several international organisations, including the ILO, for strategic advisory in crisis-prone countries. In 2016, he was part of the Economic Task Force created by the Algerian government in order to develop an economic diversification strategy following the 2014 oil price collapse.

Before founding his own company, Alexandre Kateb filled various management positions among which Chief Economist and Group Head of Research of a MENA-focused financial services company, and Deputy to the Director of Economic Research and Strategy at EXANE BNP PARIBAS. Prior to that he worked at the French Central Bank as as a Banking supervisor at  the French Banking Commission (ACPR), and as a financial economist at the Financial Stability Department, where he monitored hedge funds and other non-banking financial institutions.

Alongside these assignments, Alexandre has been lecturing in Macroeconomics and International Finance at Sciences Po Paris over the past ten years. He is the author of acclaimed economic books including “The New World Powers. Why the BRICs are changing the world” (ed. Ellipses, 2011) and “Arab economies on the move. A new development model for the MENA region” (ed. De Boeck, 2019, foreword by Pascal Lamy).

Fluent in French (native language), English, Russian and Arabic, with a working knowledge of Spanish and German, Alexander Kateb has been invited to participate as a key note speaker in high profile conferences all over the world. He is frequently asked for his generally contrarian views on the markets, the global economy and key geopolitical developments by leading broadcasting media, including BBC World, France 24, TRT World, Russia Today, El-Ikhbariya, Al Jazeera, RTS, TV5 Monde, Voice of America, …). He has also written uncountable Op-Eds and has been extensively interviewed by leading newspapers and magasines such as Le Monde, Libération, La Tribune, Les Echos, Jeune Afrique, Le Point, L’Express, O Globo, Le Quotidien du Peuple, The Christian Science Monitor, L’Orient Le Jour, Bloomberg, Financial Times, Caixin Global.

Alexandre Kateb holds a graduate degree in Quantitative economics from Ecole Centrale Paris (Master of Engineering) and a degree in Finance and Corporate strategy from Sciences Po Paris (Master of Arts).
