Alexandre Kateb is the founder and chairman of The Multipolarity Report. Alexandre has 20 years of professional experience at the crossroads of financial and strategic advisory, macroeconomic analysis and public policy. Through COMPETENCE FINANCE the advisory boutique he founded in 2009, when the world was still reeling from the Great Financial Crisis, he delivered strategic advisory to governments, financial institutions (central banks and commercial banks, investment funds, stock exchanges and clearing houses, regulatory bodies) and multinational corporations on topics ranging from strategic foresight and operational transformation to risk anticipation and regulatory watch. Corporate clients include some high profile companies and organisations like the BNP Paribas Group and LCH Clearnet – the leading European clearing house -, alongside institutional investors and a select number of hedge funds and private equity funds.
Alexandre Kateb also advised a select number of governments in Europe, Africa and the Middle East on topics ranging from economic policy, sector reform – with a focus on the financial sector and the development of the private sector – and investment promotion strategies. At several occasions, Alexandre has been mandated by UN affiliated agencies and development finance institutions to provide thought leadership and strategic advisory. In 2016, he was appointed as on of the six members of an independent Economic Task Force set up by the Prime Minister of Algeria to draft a new economic development model for this major African country. The resulting blueprint was praised by the European Commission, the IMF and the World Bank. In 2018, Alexandre also advised the Government of Chad on the overhaul of its oil revenue management framework and the design of fair and inclusive economic reforms.
Prior to embracing a career as an independent consultant and senior economic advisor, Alexandre Kateb filled a number of management positions, including a position as Chief Economist and Group Head of Research of a pioneering MENA-focused financial services company and Deputy to the Director of Economic Research and Strategy at EXANE BNP PARIBAS. He also worked as a Banking supervisor at the French Banking Commission (ACPR) and as a senior economist within the Financial Stability Division of the Central Bank of France, where he monitored hedge funds and other non-banking financial institutions.
Alongside these professional assignments, Alexandre lectured in Macroeconomics and Finance for more than ten years, as an Adjunct Professor at Sciences Po Paris. He is the author of acclaimed non-fiction books, including “The New World Powers. Why the BRICs are changing the world” (Ellipses, 2011) and “Arab economies on the move. A new development model for the MENA region“ (De Boeck Sup, 2019, foreword by former WTO Director General Pascal Lamy). Along the years, Alexandre provided strategic advisory and thought leadership for several think tanks, including Institut Choiseul, Morocco’s Institut Royal des Etudes Stratégiques, the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, the Robert Schuman Foundation and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.
Fluent in French (native), English, Russian and Arabic, with a working knowledge of Spanish and German and an interest in Chinese (Putonghua), Alexander is frequently invited to deliver key note speeches at high profile conferences and forums all over the world, from Seoul to Moscow, Rio de Janeiro and Washington. He is frequently asked for his contrarian views on the markets, the global economy and key geopolitical developments by leading news agencies and broadcasting media channels, including BBC World, France 24, TRT World, Russia Today, El-Ikhbariya, Al Jazeera, RTS, TV5 Monde, Voice of America, …). He has written uncountable Op-Eds and has been interviewed by leading newspapers such as Le Monde, Libération, La Tribune, Les Echos, Jeune Afrique, Le Point, L’Express, O Globo, China’s People’s Daily, The Christian Science Monitor, The Huffington Post, L’Orient Le Jour, Bloomberg News, Financial Times, Caixin Global, Le Vif.
Alexandre Kateb holds a Master’s degree in Engineering from Ecole Centrale Paris (now CentraleSupelec) with a Major in Quantitative Finance and Economics and a Master’s degree in Political Economy from Sciences Po Paris. He also studied Political science and Public Law at the University of Bonn in Germany.
